Key events of 1917 not only influenced the outcome of
World War I but continue to be felt in political, social, and cultural spheres.
Using 1917 as a focal point, the Myriad faces symposium will expand outwards to reflect on the significant impact of the Great War and the wider role of conflict – and peace – in our contemporary world.
The narrative of the First World War is characterised by a multitude of perspectives, practices, cultures, histories, locations, and expressions.
The myriad faces of war: 1917 and its legacy symposium will draw together many of these diverse facets of the war into a shared, conceptual space of visual arts, theatre, poetry, prose, and animation along with oral presentations, panel discussions, and workshops.
The symposium themes include: memory & remembrance and human experience.
A prestigious and innovative peer-reviewed publication of selected contributions is planned following the symposium.
- The myriad faces of war: 1917 and its legacy is an international, multidisciplinary symposium in New Zealand organised by Massey University, Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, Auckland War Memorial Museum, and University of Auckland.
