On an intimate scale, conflict creates profound upheavals that are still difficult for us to grasp. However, numerous correspondences allow us to enter in these paper links woven between the battle and home fronts. From these we can measure how much the conflict affected individuals and their social practices. More broadly, the maintenance of these regular, often daily, epistolary links partly explains how civilians and combatants endured, for so long, a murderous and absurd war.
