Trained as an industrial jeweler and founding member of FLUXUS, a contemporary jewellery workshop & gallery in Dunedin, 1983 – 2006, Mulqueen gained a Post Graduate Diploma and Master of Fine Art from the Australian National University, Canberra and Otago School of Art . The Sydney-based writer and curator Dr Grace Cochrane describes Stephen’s work as informed by the search for meaning and connection: “He carries out detailed research into his subjects and gains insights into the meanings of objects, their contexts and their significance to people, that reflect in the imaginative and skilled resolution of his artworks. He makes strong visual and poetic connections between art forms and between geographic and cultural locations”.
